Start "networking" but more so just make friends with the people you want to read. Ideally with those who also have a fairly large following. If they like what you're doing then they will retweet and tell their friends.
The best promotion in any sector is word of mouth from friends. People trust what their friends say is important far more than anything else. Simply because you or any other company would never say anything bad about yourself so promoting yourself doesn't do much for convincing others that you should be listened to. If they have a friend whom they trust and they say it's important, well you get my point.
On Twitter start replying to people and having conversations. If you're leaving comments on other blogs leave well thought out comments. Both are quick ways of starting new relationships.

In the meantime, the best way to promote your articles is by submitting them to social media sites and interacting on those sites.
A site that I would recommend you focus on is Stumble Upon, one the most visited and popular sites in the world. Subscribe to different users on StubmleUpon and Like and review the different links (Interact) you will see people will start noticing you and check out your articles. Make sure you do favourite your articles though, to put them on the map of course.

Well, at least for the first month or so, try writing some research articles. Take a topic, say... 'Creative use of colors in logo design' and search the entire web for some really cool examples. Give a small description and explain how such logos can be an advantage or disadvantage. This, of course is just an example.
Once done, I think the best suggestion anyone can give is 'Promote them'. There are numerous networking websites. Make a lot of friends and mail them, asking them for consensual sharing. Thus, both of you will benefit from each other.
If you are good at something, why not put it to good use. Try answering questions in several design forums, just like these. Answer questions on 'How to do this?' People will surely notice you, if your answer is really good. They will visit your site for more of such tips. Effectively you will be leaving a trail to your website.
